John 15:25 NIV
But this happened so that the statement written in their law might be fulfilled: They hated me for no reason.
Context:
John Chapter 15 is a powerful passage where Jesus speaks to His disciples after the Last Supper. He provides final teachings on what they should do and what to expect in the future. Verses 1-17 focus on following Jesus’ commands and bearing fruit, with the core command being to love one another—the essence of the golden rule. This topic deserves its own blog post!
Jesus predicts the persecution that His followers would face. The disciples suffered tragic deaths for their faith (with the exception of John, the author of the Book of John). Jesus warns them that because the world hates Him and seeks to kill Him, they too will also face hatred and violence. However, he reassures them that they should not be afraid; such opposition signifies that they are truly following Him.
Jesus explains why the world hated Him—they are guilty of sin. He came to fulfill the law, which refers to the laws given to Moses for the Hebrew people. Despite their best efforts, they struggled to adhere to these rules, often resorting to animal and grain sacrifices for atonement. Unfortunately, these sacrifices could never adequately cover their sins. Therefore, a more powerful sacrifice was necessary: Jesus Himself, who lived a perfect life, paid the ultimate price for the forgiveness of all sins (past, present, and future) for those who believe in Him. It’s an incredible offer, provided one recognizes their need for forgiveness.
To accept this forgiveness, you must first acknowledge your guilt and understand that without Jesus, you will face the consequences of your sins. No other means can lead to true forgiveness. Jesus taught this message, but many rejected it, labeling it blasphemy. This rejection continues today, as some deny their guilt, others doubt Jesus’ existence, and some reject the concept of sin altogether. Others may recognize their guilt yet believe their own methods are sufficient for atonement.
Getting back to the point: While you may not personally hate Jesus, many did, because He confronted them with their guilt. It’s akin to telling someone with cancer, “I know you have cancer, and I have the cure,” only for them to lash out at you instead of accepting help. This is why Jesus said, “They hated me for no reason.”
What Does This Mean for Us? I explained that you have a disease called “Sin Guilt,” which leads to eternal death (Romans 6:23). I offered you a freely available cure (Acts 10:43). Will you accept this medicine? Will you recognize that you are spiritually dying and that Jesus is the only solution? Or will you reject Him and His offer? The choice is yours!
Deuteronomy 30:19 ERV
Today I am giving you a choice of two ways. I call heaven and earth to witness your choice. You can choose life or death. The first choice will bring a blessing; the other will bring a curse. So choose life! Then you and your children will live.
