Difficult Scriptures: Introduction (#1)

There are many scriptures in the bible that attack the human psyche. These scriptures are meant for us to see what we truly are. An imperfect creation. We have harmed others, we have been harmed by other humans, we lie, we steal, we kill, we love, but love sinfully. We are human. God has created us for good, but we chose to do evil and run away from him.

This series will look at scriptures that intend to attack us, to show us what it truly means to be human, and also to show us how “good” God truly is. As a human, our sense of “good” comes from our surroundings, what we seen, heard, smelled, touch, taste, and most importantly, learned. What is “good” can change from generation to generation, but what God says is “good” will never change.

“God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them…..God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. (Gen 1:27,29)”

In the beginning, God saw his creation and said it was good, but what happened?

“The Lord saw that the wickedness of humankind was great in the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of their hearts was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that he had made humankind on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. So, the Lord said, ‘I will blot out from the earth the human beings I have created—people together with animals and creeping things and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them. (Gen 6:5-7)’”

In about 6 chapters (and several 100 years), God saw the evil mankind was doing. What type of evil one may ask? Well just look at today…look at the last 100 years, there has always been evil things done by mankind. Evil may not look evil at first site, during WW2, America thought that dropping 2 nuclear missiles on Japanese cities full of civilians was “good.” Several hundred years ago, it was “good” to enslave a population of people, dehumanize them, and force them to work hard labor.

That’s simply American history. What about your country’s history? Actually, what about your history? Have you ever done anything that other people may consider evil? Have you ever done anything that God may consider evil?

(What does God consider evil? You can look that one up yourself. But here is a link I googled.)

Now we understand the core principle. The scriptures in this series will attempt to attack the evil in our heart. This evil is what God sees as evil, but in our own hearts, we may see as good. I’m not asking you to agree, I’m asking you to learn how God sees you. Many humans will say, “If God is real, why is there so much evil on this Earth? Does God not care?” The truth is…God cares a lot, in fact he wants to destroy this whole world and build a new one, one without evil, tears, sickness, and death. But by destroying this world, he is destroying you, his wonderful creation.

“Do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some understand slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any of you to perish, but for all to come to repentance. However, the day of the Lord will come like a thief, then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will disappear. (2 Peter 3:8-10)”

God is here folks, he is talking to you through me. Please comment and follow this blog post to learn about these challenging scriptures!

P.S. We are still a good creation, but our hearts have a nature towards evil. And that is where Jesus comes in…but that’s for later.
