So, is homosexuality a sin? Before I can answer, first we should know what sin is.

Isaiah 59:2

But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his (God’s) face from you so that he (God) does not hear.

Sin is what separates us from God. Anything that separates us from God is sin. Sin is not necessarily a bad thing, but if it separates us from God, it is sin!

So now we know that sin is anything that separates us from God, is homosexuality a sin?

1 Timothy 1:8-11

We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers,  for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.

Earlier we read about how sin is anything that separates us from God. The “law” which represents the Law of Moses was a set a rules, given by God, to tell us what Sin is. If anyone is a “lawbreaker” then they are essentially a sinner.

Here Apostle Paul lists a quick number of types of sinners, law breakers, rebels, murderers, sexual immorality, homosexuals, slave traders, liars, etc. In God’s eyes every person that acts in any of these ways are considered to be contrary to sound doctrine that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God. And that last bolded point is key.

In this list, which Paul also adds “whatever else”, we see that homosexuality is a sin. But so is everything else.

For me,

I am a lawbreaker, ungodly, sinful, unholy, sexually immoral, and a liar. I am not a rebel, irreligious, father/mother killer, murderer, homosexual, slave trader, or perjurer. As for the whatever else, you can only imagine.

For some of these sins, I am learning to seek professional help in order to combat them. I am not going to argue to God that what I do is “not sinning.” That’s akin to saying that I know better than God. I do not want to be separated from God.

There are some people reading this that is already separated from God. They do not have a relationship with him, nor do they even believe he exists.

There are some people reading this that do have a relationship with a God, but not the God of the Bible, the God the Father and his son Jesus Christ, according to the sound doctrine preached in this scripture.

There are some people reading this that do have a relationship with this God, they do follow the teachings and the sound doctrine, preached in the Bible, yet they are like me, they fall short.

This is to encourage everyone reading. God wants to have a relationship with us, he hates being separated from you. That’s why he lists these sins, so that we may know them and combat and fight for our relationship with God.

If you do not want a relationship with God, continue living your life, but for those who do, fight the good fight of faith and persevere to the end!

1 Timothy 6:12

Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
